SPRINGFIELD – Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias is leading the effort to name the reading room at the Illinois State Library after former Governor and Secretary of State Jim Edgar, recognizing his contributions to libraries and literacy in Illinois. The Jim Edgar Reading Room will house the Illinois Authors’ Collection, highlighting Edgar’s role in selecting 35 authors featured on the library building, which he helped develop during his tenure as Secretary of State. Giannoulias introduced House Joint Resolution 0025 to officially name the room, and the bipartisan measure passed the Illinois House and is now awaiting a Senate vote. Edgar, who served as State Librarian and was known for advancing programs like Read Illinois and ILLINET Online, is being recognized for a career that helped shape the state’s library system and promote adult literacy.
