CHICAGO — A federal judge has temporarily blocked the U.S. Department of Education from ending school based mental health grants after Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul and attorneys general from 14 other states filed a lawsuit challenging the cuts. The temporary restraining order keeps funding in place for programs serving more than 50,000 Illinois public school students while the case moves forward. Raoul said the grants provide critical mental health services that support students and help keep schools safe. A hearing on a preliminary injunction is scheduled for Aug. 24 to determine whether the protections should remain in place while the lawsuit continues.
